I am a Full professor in Innovation Studies at Lund University School of Economics and Management and CIRCLE (the Center for Innovation, Research and Competences in the Learning Economy), in Sweden. I am also the Director of the Master program in Innovation and Global Sustainable Development
I hold a Bachelor in Economics with a major in Development economics and a PhD in Economics, specialized in Economics of Innovation.
My current work is driven by the conviction that a sustainable and inclusive world is possible but that achieving that goal will require radical changes in current systems of production and consumption. In my research, I look for innovative practices all over the world, which combine novel ways to acquire income, with social equity and nature conservation.
I am quite concerned about the slow speed in which transformations unfold, given the urgency of current world challenges like climate change or biodiversity loss. In this sense, my latest work centers on analyzing if and how can sustainability transformations be accelerated.
As a researcher, I am particularly interested in the process of transformation from unsustainable to sustainable systems. My leading questions are what might enable the direction and geographical scale of the transformation and how can transformations be accelerated. The latter is paramount if we consider the urgency of the challenges our planet is facing today.
Currently, I am investigating regions around the world whose fast transformation is particularly important worldwide. Those are critical regions because they are particularly vulnerable to global unsustainable human action (for example, Small Island Development States or regions around protected areas), or because they have a high impact on the transformation of world-systems (for example, the Amazon basin or Boreal forests).
I work regularly as an international expert for international organizations such as the European Commission, UNCTAD, OECD, and UN-ECLAC. I have extensively published in international journals, refereed books and handbooks in the fields of innovation, international business, development studies, and sustainability like Research Policy, Industry and Innovation, World Development, Journal of International Management, Sustainability, Technology Forecasting and Social Change, Innovation and Development, and European Planning Studies.
I am a proud elected member of the Board of Globelics, the global network for learning, innovation, and competence systems research and of the scientific board of Eurolics, the European network of research on inclusive and sustainable development in Europe.

In 2020 I am on leave from the university and working as volunteer in nature conservation projects in Costa Rica, being the student instead of the teacher and the practitioner instead of the academic. I hope to return with new perspectives, a backpack full of knowledge and experiences, and renewed energy to continue working for transformations for sustainable development.
During this year, I will not be checking my university email.
